The Isdera Spyder 036i is the kind of sports car that feels almost impossible to separate from its creator’s unconventional approach to engineering. With its tiny production run, open two-seat body and mid-mounted engine, it was never intended to compete through volume or mainstream appeal. Instead, Isdera built the Spyder around lightweight construction and a focused driving layout, giving this rare German exotic a character very different from the larger, more familiar supercars of its era. Its unusual proportions and low-slung stance make it particularly memorable even before the engine is started.
The 1991–1992 Spyder 036i uses a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six producing 217 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels, while the lightweight chassis helps deliver a 6.2-second 0–60 mph time and a 162-mph top speed. With its rear-mid-engine layout and two-seat configuration, the Spyder remains a distinctly focused interpretation of the open sports car.
