The Isdera Spyder 036i belongs to a rare breed of sports cars created with far more individuality than commercial ambition. Its open cockpit, compact proportions and unusual mid-mounted layout gave the car a presence that stood apart from mainstream performance machinery of the late 1980s. Isdera kept the concept focused on low weight and direct involvement rather than adding layers of luxury equipment, resulting in a machine that feels closer to a hand-built engineering project than a conventional production roadster. The Spyder’s scarcity only adds to its fascination today.
From 1988–1990, the Spyder 036i was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-six producing 185 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking about 6.8 seconds and top speed reaching 149 mph. Its rear-mid-engine layout and two-seat configuration reinforce the lightweight, driver-focused philosophy behind this unusual Isdera.
