The Ginetta G31 represents the company’s more practical interpretation of the classic British sports coupe, combining a compact body with room for occasional rear passengers. Its low, purposeful shape and lightweight construction gave it a character quite different from heavier mainstream coupes of the period. The emphasis was on simplicity and driver involvement, with a traditional mechanical layout that allowed the car’s modest dimensions to remain central to the experience.
For 1986–1991, the G31 used a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four producing 105 hp and 116 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sent power to the rear wheels, giving the coupe the classic drivetrain arrangement associated with lightweight British sports cars. Its compact proportions and 2+2 seating added a useful touch of versatility without taking away from its focused character.
