The RUF CTR Yellowbird transformed the foundations of the Porsche 911 into a high-performance coupé that challenged the world’s most exotic sports cars. Built by German manufacturer RUF, it combined familiar rear-engine proportions with extensive engineering changes, lightweight construction and a powerful twin-turbocharged flat-six. Its restrained exterior concealed extraordinary performance, while its mechanical character reflected an era when driver skill and engineering mattered more than electronic driving aids. The Yellowbird’s reputation grew through high-speed testing that demonstrated the potential of RUF’s approach, securing its place among the most celebrated performance cars of its generation.
Produced from 1987 to 1996, the CTR Yellowbird uses a 3.4-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six petrol engine producing 463 hp and 408 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to the rear wheels, while its rear-engine layout contributes to its distinctive handling character. With a reported 0–60 mph time of 4.0 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph, it delivered exceptional performance for its era. Its combination of turbocharged power, lightweight construction and analogue driving involvement remains central to its appeal.
