The AC Ace 4WD brought an unusual engineering approach to the British roadster formula, combining an open two-seat body with a four-wheel-drive layout. Its low bonnet, rounded bodywork and compact proportions give it a traditional sports car appearance, while the front-mounted engine and longitudinal arrangement distinguish its mechanical configuration. Double-wishbone suspension at both ends supports the chassis, and the four-wheel-drive system provides a different approach to traction compared with the rear-wheel-drive configuration found in many contemporary roadsters. The result is an uncommon combination of open-top sports car styling and all-weather drivetrain engineering.
Produced during 1992–1993, the Ace 4WD uses a naturally aspirated 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 214 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. A five-speed manual gearbox sends power to all four wheels. Its claimed 0–62 mph acceleration time of 8.2 seconds and top speed of 140 mph give it respectable performance, while a kerb weight of 3,336 pounds reflects its substantial mechanical package.
