The Nissan Almera Pulsar VZ-R N1 is a rare example of Nissan’s high-revving performance engineering applied to a compact hatchback. Its three-door body and relatively restrained styling conceal an unusually focused character, with the emphasis placed on engine response and lightweight practicality rather than extravagant looks. The defining feature is its SR16VE engine, whose high-revving nature sets it apart from ordinary family hatchbacks of the period. Developed as a more specialised performance model, the VZ-R N1 appeals to enthusiasts who appreciate Japanese engineering, naturally aspirated power and the involvement of a traditional manual gearbox. Its compact dimensions and usable rear seats also mean it retains the everyday flexibility of a small hatchback, making its performance-oriented character all the more distinctive.
The 1997 VZ-R N1 uses a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline-four producing 197 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission drives the front wheels, enabling a claimed 0–60 mph time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 112 mph. With five seats and approximately 12 cubic feet of luggage space, it combines serious performance with compact-car practicality.
