The Nissan Almera 2.0 GTi shows how an ordinary compact hatchback can become a genuinely entertaining driver's car without losing its everyday usefulness. Its three-door body, compact proportions and understated styling give it a purposeful character rather than the exaggerated appearance of a dedicated sports model. The appeal lies in its balance: a naturally aspirated engine, conventional front-wheel-drive layout and relatively light body create a straightforward, involving driving experience. As part of Nissan's 1990s performance-car era, the GTi offered enthusiasts a practical alternative to larger, more expensive sporting models. Its five-seat cabin and useful boot also mean that performance does not come at the expense of routine commuting or weekend travel.
Produced from 1996 to 1998, the Almera 2.0 GTi uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter inline-four producing 141 hp and 131 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission drives the front wheels, delivering a 0–60 mph time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. With five seats and 12 cubic feet of luggage space, it combines lively performance with compact-hatchback practicality.
