1999, 2000, 2001
MSRP:$13,000 – $14,500
Unlike the four-door Baleno saloon, the 1.6 GS packages its mechanicals into a shorter three-door hatchback body. This gives it a more compact appearance while retaining seating for five and a foldable rear bench for occasional extra cargo space. Its front-wheel-drive layout and naturally aspirated petrol engine keep the design conventional, while the 177-litre luggage compartment provides useful room for everyday essentials. The GS is an interesting choice for drivers who prefer hatchback proportions without giving up the performance of the larger 1.6-litre engine.
For 1999–2001, the DOHC 1,590 cc inline-four produces 95 hp and 99 lb·ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were available. With a listed 109 mph top speed and 32.2 mpg combined economy, the GS balances respectable performance with the practicality of a compact family hatchback.
