The Baleno 1.0 Boosterjet is an interesting example of how downsizing can deliver more than just better fuel economy. Suzuki's direct-injection turbo engine gives this lightweight five-door hatchback a stronger performance character than its compact dimensions might suggest. At the same time, its 2,520 mm wheelbase and flexible rear seating arrangement help create a cabin with room for five and a useful luggage area. The result is a small car that combines urban manoeuvrability with the flexibility needed for longer journeys.
What makes the Boosterjet distinctive is the way its three-cylinder engine develops its pulling power: 125 lb·ft is available from 2,000 rpm, giving it useful low-rev response without requiring constant high engine speeds. The 2016–2020 model produces 110 hp, reaches 124 mph and returns a listed 53.5 mpg combined. A five-speed manual or automatic transmission option completes the front-wheel-drive package.
