The Proton Gen•2 1.6 carried the Malaysian manufacturer’s distinctive hatchback design into its final production years, retaining the sharply angled headlamps, sculpted bodywork, and sloping roofline that gave it a more dynamic appearance than many conventional compact cars. Its five-door configuration provided practical access to the cabin and luggage area, while the driver-oriented cockpit and Lotus-influenced chassis development contributed to its engaging road manners. Rather than relying on luxury or excessive power, the Gen•2 combined youthful styling, everyday usability, and responsive handling in a compact package.
For the 2012–2013 range, the Gen•2 1.6 featured a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve inline-four petrol engine producing 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 109 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission delivered power to the front wheels. MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension supported balanced cornering and predictable road behaviour, while the five-seat cabin and five-door body provided everyday practicality. This combination gave the hatchback a straightforward mechanical character with an emphasis on driver involvement.
