The Proton Gen•2 1.6 gave the Malaysian manufacturer a distinctive presence in the compact hatchback segment, combining sharply sculpted bodywork with a sloping roofline and a practical five-door layout. Its angular styling set it apart from more conventional family cars, while the cabin offered seating for five and flexible luggage space. Engineering input from Lotus helped shape its steering response and chassis balance, giving the hatchback a more engaging character on winding roads. The facelifted version refined the interior with a redesigned dashboard and improved everyday usability, while retaining the model’s sporty proportions.
For the 2008–2012 range, the Gen•2 1.6 used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve inline-four petrol engine with Proton’s CamPro IAFM technology, designed to improve torque delivery at lower engine speeds. AutoSpecsHub lists output at 110 hp at 6,000 rpm and 109 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. Power went to the front wheels through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension supported balanced handling and everyday ride comfort.
