The Proton Gen•2 R3 transformed the compact Gen•2 hatchback into a more focused performance model shaped by Race, Rally, Research (R3), Proton’s motorsport and performance division. Its purposeful body kit, lowered stance, lightweight alloy wheels, and distinctive sporting details gave it a more assertive character than the standard car. R3’s engineering approach extended beyond appearance, with chassis modifications and revised suspension settings intended to improve control and driver involvement. The result was a limited, enthusiast-oriented interpretation of Proton’s five-door hatchback, combining everyday practicality with a stronger motorsport identity.
For the 2007–2010 range, the Gen•2 R3 featured a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre DOHC inline-four petrol engine producing 133 hp at 6,490 rpm and 114 lb-ft of torque at 5,480 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission sent power to the front wheels, keeping the driving experience direct and engaging. R3-tuned suspension, MacPherson struts at the front, and multi-link rear suspension supported its emphasis on sharper handling and improved body control. Its blend of performance upgrades and compact dimensions made it a distinctive alternative to conventional economy hatchbacks.
