The Rover 200 220 GTi Turbo brought substantial performance to Rover’s compact hatchback range, combining a practical three-door body with a turbocharged engine and understated sporting details. Its purposeful stance, distinctive alloy wheels, and compact proportions gave it a more assertive character than the standard 200-series models. The five-seat cabin retained everyday usability, while the front-wheel-drive layout and performance-focused chassis made it appealing to drivers seeking strong acceleration in a relatively discreet British hatchback. Rather than relying on dramatic styling, the GTi Turbo paired a restrained exterior with serious mechanical capability.
For the 1993–1995 range, the Rover 200 220 GTi Turbo used a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four petrol engine with double overhead camshafts and 16 valves. AutoSpecsHub lists output at 197 hp at 6,999 rpm and torque at 174 lb-ft at 2,100 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission delivered power to the front wheels. MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension supported handling, while ventilated front disc brakes and solid rear disc brakes provided stopping power. With a listed top speed of 146 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 6.4 seconds, it delivered performance well beyond that of an ordinary compact hatchback.
