The Rover 200 220 GTi combines a five-door compact hatchback body with a naturally aspirated two-litre petrol engine. Its practical layout accommodates five occupants and offers 12.4 cubic feet of luggage space, making it suitable for everyday use without sacrificing performance. The transversely mounted front engine drives the front wheels, while the GTi’s independent front and rear suspension provides the mechanical foundation for its road-going character. With its compact proportions and understated design, the 220 GTi blends useful passenger space with the stronger output of a larger-displacement engine.
For the 1992–1996 model range, the Rover 200 220 GTi uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre inline-four gasoline engine with double overhead camshafts, 16 valves, and multi-point fuel injection. AutoSpecsHub lists maximum power at 138 hp at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 97 lb-ft at 4,500 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the front wheels. The suspension setup consists of MacPherson struts at the front and double wishbones at the rear, with disc brakes on both axles. Listed performance figures include a top speed of 126 mph and 0–60 mph acceleration in 7.6 seconds. Combined fuel economy is rated at 28.3 mpg.
