The Rover 200 216 Coupé gave Rover’s compact range a distinctive two-door alternative, combining a sleek roofline, compact proportions, and understated British styling. Its coupé body created a more individual appearance than a conventional hatchback, while the four-seat cabin and separate luggage area preserved everyday practicality. Designed to offer comfortable cruising alongside responsive road manners, the 216 Coupé occupied a middle ground between ordinary family cars and the more powerful turbocharged version. Its naturally aspirated engine and front-wheel-drive layout made it a more accessible choice for drivers seeking coupé styling without the added intensity of a turbocharged powertrain.
For the 1994–1996 range, the Rover 200 216 Coupé used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre DOHC 16-valve inline-four petrol engine producing 120 hp at 6,800 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 5,700 rpm. Power was delivered to the front wheels through either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension supported its handling, while ventilated front disc brakes and solid rear disc brakes provided stopping power. AutoSpecsHub lists a top speed of 124 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 9.3 seconds, giving the coupé brisk performance for its class.
