The Rover 200 216 Cabriolet brought open-air motoring to Rover’s compact car range, combining the familiar proportions of the 200 series with a folding fabric roof and a four-seat-style convertible profile. Its clean body lines, compact dimensions, and understated British styling gave it a relaxed touring character, while the open cabin offered a more engaging alternative to the fixed-roof 216 Coupé. A separate luggage compartment preserved everyday usefulness, making the Cabriolet suitable for more than occasional leisure drives. Its combination of convertible styling and front-wheel-drive packaging offered an accessible way to enjoy open-top motoring without stepping up to a larger grand tourer.
For the 1992–1996 range, the Rover 200 216 Cabriolet used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre inline-four petrol engine with a single overhead camshaft and 16 valves. AutoSpecsHub lists output at 120 hp at 6,800 rpm and torque at 103 lb-ft at 5,700 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission delivered power to the front wheels. MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension supported balanced handling, while disc brakes were fitted at both ends. With a listed top speed of 118 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 9.3 seconds, the Cabriolet combined comfortable open-air cruising with capable everyday performance.
