The Smart Fortwo cabrio & pulse pairs an ultra-compact footprint with the enjoyment of open-top driving. Its retractable roof adds a convertible feel to a design made for narrow streets and tight parking spaces, while the two-seat cabin keeps the focus on personal urban transport. The rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive layout give this little car a distinctive character, and its compact proportions make it well suited to city errands and short leisure drives. With only 5.3 cubic feet of luggage space, it is best suited to light bags rather than bulky cargo.
For the 2003–2006 model range, the Fortwo cabrio & pulse uses a turbocharged 698 cc inline-three petrol engine with a single overhead camshaft and six valves. It produces 60 hp at 5,250 rpm and 70 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. A six-speed sequential automated manual transmission drives the rear wheels. AutoSpecsHub lists a top speed of 84 mph and 0–60 mph acceleration in 17.7 seconds. Combined economy is rated at 50 US mpg, with a listed range of 436 miles.
