The Smart Fortwo Crossblade is an unconventional open-air roadster that strips away the traditional roof and conventional doors to create a distinctive two-seat driving experience. Its exposed design and compact proportions make it unlike an ordinary city car, while the rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive layout preserve the distinctive mechanical arrangement of the Fortwo platform. With just 4.3 cubic feet of luggage space, the Crossblade prioritises open-air motoring and individuality over weather protection or everyday practicality. Its limited production and unusual body design give it a special place among Smart’s most distinctive models.
Produced for the 2002–2003 model years, the Crossblade uses a turbocharged 599 cc inline-three petrol engine with a single overhead camshaft, six valves, and multi-point fuel injection. It develops 70 hp at 5,470 rpm and 74 lb-ft of torque at 3,210 rpm, paired with a six-speed automated manual transmission driving the rear wheels. AutoSpecsHub lists a top speed of 84 mph and 0–60 mph acceleration in 16.5 seconds. The page reports combined fuel economy of 42 mpg and a driving range of 365 miles.
