MSRP:$2,500 – $5,000
The Saab 9-3 Coupé 2.2 TiD brought diesel efficiency to Saab’s compact coupé range, combining understated Swedish styling with the practicality of a three-door body. Its restrained design avoided the more assertive character of the turbocharged petrol performance models, while the five-seat cabin and flexible rear cargo area made it suitable for everyday journeys. The diesel engine gave this version a distinct purpose, favouring useful pulling power and economical long-distance driving over outright acceleration. It offered a practical alternative for drivers who valued Saab’s individual engineering approach in a compact, everyday car.
For the 1998–2001 range, power came from a turbocharged 2.2-litre, 16-valve inline-four diesel producing 113 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a reported 0–60 mph time of 10.5 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph, the 9-3 Coupé 2.2 TiD prioritised usable performance and efficiency. Its five-seat cabin and 17.4–31.7-cubic-foot luggage capacity added the flexibility needed for regular commuting and longer trips.
