MSRP:$3,000 – $7,000
The Saab 9-3 2.0 Turbo combined understated Scandinavian styling with the flexibility of a five-door fastback and the added performance of a turbocharged petrol engine. Its practical body provided space for five occupants and everyday luggage, while the restrained exterior reflected Saab’s distinctive, engineering-led design approach. Rather than pursuing an aggressive sports-car character, the 9-3 balanced usable performance with the comfort and versatility expected of a compact family car. Front-wheel drive and a choice of manual or automatic transmission made it suitable for varied driving needs, while the turbocharged engine gave this version a stronger performance character than the naturally aspirated models.
For the 1998–1999 range, power came from a turbocharged 2.0-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 182 hp at 5,500 rpm and 194 lb-ft of torque at 2,100 rpm. Buyers could choose a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, both driving the front wheels. With a top speed of 143 mph and a reported 0–60 mph time of 7.7 seconds, the 9-3 2.0 Turbo offered lively acceleration without giving up everyday practicality. Its five-seat cabin and 17.4–31.7 cubic feet of luggage capacity made it a versatile choice for drivers seeking a blend of performance and utility.
