The Saab 9-3 Coupé 2.2 TiD brought economical diesel motoring to Saab’s compact coupé range, pairing restrained Scandinavian styling with a practical three-door body. Its understated design and five-seat cabin made it suited to everyday commuting and longer journeys, while the flexible luggage area added useful versatility. Rather than prioritising sporty acceleration, this version focused on efficient travel and the low-speed pulling power associated with a turbocharged diesel engine. It offered a distinctive Swedish alternative for drivers who wanted practical transport with a character different from conventional family cars.
For the 2001–2002 range, power came from a turbocharged 2.2-litre, 16-valve inline-four diesel producing 123 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sent power to the front wheels, with peak torque available at 1,900 rpm. The coupé reached 60 mph in 10.0 seconds and had a top speed of 124 mph. Seating for five and a luggage capacity of 17.4–31.7 cubic feet gave it everyday flexibility alongside its emphasis on fuel-efficient driving.
