Hyundai took an unconventional route with the original Veloster, giving its compact coupe a distinctive asymmetric three-door body and a layout aimed at drivers who wanted something more individual than a conventional hatchback. The naturally aspirated 1.6 was the mainstream choice, keeping the car approachable while its sharp profile and sporty cabin gave it a stronger personality than its modest performance figures suggested. For 2011–2015, the Veloster 1.6 established the formula that would later make the turbocharged version possible.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter inline-four producing 138 hp and 123 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual or six-speed automatic sends power to the front wheels, while the car reaches 60 mph in 9.4 seconds. Its combination of a compact footprint, four-seat cabin, and unusual three-door configuration gives the Veloster a practical side without losing the character of a sporty coupe.
