As the original TT approached the end of its production life, the 1.8 T 163 offered a modest but useful step up from the earlier 150-hp version while keeping the car’s front-wheel-drive simplicity. Introduced for 2005–2006, its turbocharged 1.8-liter five-valve engine produced 161 hp and 166 lb-ft, with a five-speed manual transmission and a 139-mph top speed. The 7.7-second 0–60 mph time gave this compact Coupé enough urgency without moving into the more powerful quattro or V6 versions.

Its appeal was less about headline performance and more about how neatly the package worked as a whole. MacPherson-strut front suspension, a torsion-beam rear setup and ventilated front brakes kept the chassis straightforward, while the flexible rear luggage area made the TT surprisingly useful for a small sports coupé. The rounded exterior remained unmistakable, but the facelift-era mechanical package gave this version a mature balance of turbocharged flexibility, everyday practicality and understated sporting ability.
