Audi broke with convention when it introduced a diesel-powered TT Roadster, combining the second-generation model’s clean proportions with a torque-rich four-cylinder engine. The 2008–2014 version used a 2.0-liter common-rail turbo-diesel producing 168 hp and 258 lb-ft, with a six-speed manual and quattro all-wheel drive. A 139-mph top speed and 7.5-second 0–60 mph time gave the open-top TT respectable pace while its diesel character emphasized effortless mid-range pulling power.

The engineering package made the Roadster particularly unusual for its time. Transverse engine placement worked with the quattro system, MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, while ventilated front and solid rear discs provided braking hardware suited to its performance. The two-seat cabin and 8.8-cubic-foot luggage compartment kept the car practical enough for longer journeys, and its 42.8-mpg combined economy highlighted the reason for choosing the diesel. It was a technically distinctive TT that showed Audi could apply efficiency-focused powertrain technology without abandoning the model’s sporting identity.
