The Proton Satria 316 GLSi brought practical compact-car motoring to a three-door hatchback format, combining manageable dimensions with the convenience of a rear hatch. Its straightforward styling and front-wheel-drive layout suited everyday commuting, while the compact body made it easy to manoeuvre through urban traffic and park in tight spaces. As part of Proton’s first-generation Satria range, the GLSi prioritised accessible performance and everyday usability rather than the sharper sporting character of the GTi. Its functional cabin and flexible rear cargo area made it a useful choice for drivers seeking a small car for daily journeys without unnecessary complexity.
For the 1999–2001 range, power came from a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre, 16-valve inline-four producing 94 hp at 5,500 rpm and 100 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission sent power to the front wheels. With a top speed of 112 mph and a 0–60 mph time of 10.9 seconds, the Satria 316 GLSi offered modest performance suited to everyday driving. Its three-door body, five-seat cabin, and 8.5–20.3 cubic feet of luggage capacity provided useful flexibility for shopping and short trips, making it a practical alternative to the more performance-focused Satria variants.
