The Mazda RX-8 (231) brought Mazda’s distinctive rotary-engine philosophy into a sporty four-door coupe package, combining sleek styling with a high-revving naturally aspirated powertrain. Its front-mounted engine and rear-wheel-drive layout gave the car an enthusiast-focused character, while the four-seat cabin and unusual rear-hinged rear doors added a degree of practicality uncommon among performance coupes. The RX-8 stood apart from conventional sports cars through its compact rotary engine, balanced proportions and distinctive approach to performance.
The 2003–2010 Mazda RX-8 (231) uses a naturally aspirated 1.3-liter twin-rotor engine producing 228 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, with 0–60 mph taking 6.2 seconds and 0–62 mph taking 6.4 seconds. Top speed reaches 146 mph, while its four-door, four-seat layout gives the RX-8 an unusual combination of sports-car performance and everyday usability.
