Some small SUVs of the mid-2000s were little more than raised family cars, but the Terios 1.5 4WD retained a distinctly rugged mechanical identity. Its compact footprint was paired with genuine all-wheel drive, giving Daihatsu a way to offer everyday practicality without abandoning the idea of a small vehicle that could cope with rougher conditions. The naturally aspirated 1.5-litre engine was uncomplicated rather than forceful, but its 140 Nm of torque suited the vehicle's modest size and purposeful character.
The 2006–2009 version also showed how much utility Daihatsu could fit into a relatively small body. Five seats and a 380-litre luggage compartment made it useful for family duties, while the upright shape and four-wheel-drive hardware reinforced its mini-SUV identity. Period data confirms the 105 PS output, 160 km/h top speed and 12.4-second 0–100 km/h time. Rather than chasing the refinement of larger SUVs, the Terios focused on being compact, uncomplicated and genuinely versatile.
