Ford Ranger Towing Capacity: 7,500 lbs, If It's Set Up Right
Ford Ranger towing capacity tops out at 7,500 lbs with the tow package. See where it drops for the Raptor, trucks without the package, and older Rangers.

Ask around and you'll hear a lot of different Ford Ranger towing capacity figures, and most of them are right for somebody's truck.
A modern Ranger can pull up to 7,500 pounds, but only with the Trailer Tow Package, and only if it isn't a Raptor. The Raptor tops out at 5,510 pounds. Rangers built before 2012 can reach about 6,000 pounds with a 4.0L V6 automatic, but most tow far less.
That gap between the headline number and the truck in your driveway is where most towing mistakes start.
How Much Can a Ford Ranger Tow?
Ford Ranger towing capacity depends on three things: the model year, the engine, and whether the truck has the tow package. Here is the short version.
Ranger | Max towing | Notes |
2024 to 2026 (2.3L or 2.7L) | 7,500 lbs | Needs the Trailer Tow Package |
2024 to 2026 Raptor (3.0L V6) | 5,510 lbs | Lower rating than the standard Ranger |
2019 to 2023 (2.3L) | 7,500 lbs | Needs the Trailer Tow Package |
2001 to 2011 | About 6,000 lbs at best | 4.0L V6 with automatic only |
Ford says the 7,500 pound figure applies when the truck is properly equipped with the available Trailer Tow Package, and that the XL, XLT, and Lariat can all reach it. The Raptor is the exception.
Ford Ranger Towing Capacity by Generation
2024 to 2026 Ranger
Ford redesigned the Ranger for 2024 on a new platform. Two engines power the standard trucks, and the Raptor gets its own.
Engine | Power | Drivetrain | Max towing | GCWR |
2.3L EcoBoost I-4 | 270 hp, 310 lb-ft | 4x2 | 7,500 lbs | 12,370 lbs |
2.3L EcoBoost I-4 | 270 hp, 310 lb-ft | 4x4 | 7,500 lbs | 12,590 lbs |
2.7L EcoBoost V6 | 315 hp, 400 lb-ft | 4x4 | 7,500 lbs | 12,745 lbs |
3.0L EcoBoost V6 (Raptor) | 405 hp, 430 lb-ft | AWD | 5,510 lbs | 11,465 lbs |
The GCWR column is the gross combined weight rating, and it comes from Ford's 2024 towing tables. Ford's current 2026 listing carries the same 7,500 and 5,510 pound maximums. The 2.7L V6 is offered on XLT and Lariat trims with four-wheel drive only.
2019 to 2023 Ranger
The Ranger returned to the US for 2019 after a seven-year break, with one engine: the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder, making 270 hp and 310 lb-ft. Ford's tables list 7,500 lbs for both SuperCab and SuperCrew trucks, in 2WD and 4WD, with a gross combined weight rating between 12,150 and 12,500 lbs depending on body style and drivetrain.
The catch is the same as on newer trucks. That number requires the factory tow package.
Ranger Raptor
The Raptor's twin-turbo 3.0L V6 makes 405 hp, but Ford rates it to tow 5,510 lbs, about 2,000 lbs less than a standard Ranger. Its off-road-focused suspension and extra weight are the usual explanation. Payload takes a hit too, dropping to roughly 1,400 lbs.
That still covers many utility trailers, ATV haulers, and small boats. It just isn't the Ranger to pick if maximum towing is the goal.
Older Rangers (2001 to 2011)
Rangers sold before the 2019 relaunch tow far less, and the engine matters more than anything else. These ranges come from Ford's published towing tables for 2001 to 2011 trucks.
Engine | Transmission | Typical max trailer weight |
2.3L four-cylinder | Manual | About 1,300 to 1,700 lbs |
2.3L four-cylinder | Automatic | About 1,900 to 2,300 lbs |
3.0L V6 (through 2008) | Manual or automatic | About 2,200 to 2,700 lbs, up to about 4,100 lbs on 2001 to 2003 automatics |
4.0L V6 | Manual | About 2,700 to 3,600 lbs |
4.0L V6 | Automatic | About 5,200 to 6,000 lbs |
Only the 4.0L V6 with the automatic gets past 5,000 lbs, and even then the rating shifts with cab style, drivetrain, and axle ratio. If you're shopping for a used Ranger to tow with, find out exactly which engine, transmission, and towing equipment it has before you trust any number.
Why the Trailer Tow Package Matters
Both modern generations reach their maximum only with the Trailer Tow Package, which adds a Class IV hitch receiver and wiring harness. Without it, you're limited to bumper-hitch towing, which dealer and reference sources commonly put around 3,500 lbs. Don't assume a used Ranger can pull 7,500 lbs just because its engine could. Check the window sticker, or ask the seller for the build details.
Ford's smaller Maverick works the same way. It tows 2,000 lbs as standard and reaches 4,000 lbs only with the 4K Tow Package, as the Ford Maverick towing capacity breakdown shows by trim and engine. Ford's towing guidance also points 2019 and newer Ranger owners to Tow/Haul mode on steep grades.
Should You Pick the 2.3L or the 2.7L V6 for Towing?
Both engines carry the same 7,500 pound rating, so the number alone won't separate them. Torque does. The 2.3L makes 310 lb-ft, while the 2.7L V6 makes 400 lb-ft, which is why the V6 feels more relaxed pulling a heavy trailer up a grade. If you're not sure why torque matters more than the horsepower figure here, the breakdown of horsepower vs. torque explains it.
The trade-off is that the V6 is an optional upgrade, limited to XLT and Lariat trims with four-wheel drive. For occasional trailer use, the 2.3L does the job. For frequent heavy towing, the V6 is the better match.
Payload and Tongue Weight: The Limits People Forget
The 7,500 pound figure only measures the trailer. Three other numbers can stop you first:
Payload: Ford lists up to 1,767 lbs on the standard Ranger and roughly 1,400 lbs on the Raptor. Passengers, gear, and trailer tongue weight all count against it.
Tongue weight: Ford's guidance is 10 to 15 percent of the trailer's loaded weight. On a 7,500 lb trailer, that's 750 to 1,125 lbs pressing down on the hitch.
Gross combined weight rating (GCWR): The truck, trailer, passengers, and cargo together can't exceed it. On the 2024 2.7L V6, for example, it's 12,745 lbs.
In practice, a Ranger carrying a family and towing near its limit can run out of payload before it reaches 7,500 lbs. Ford's guidance also notes that the truck's brakes are rated for the truck itself, not the trailer. The trailer needs working brakes of its own, with a compatible controller if they're electric.
Does the Ranger Out-Tow the Tacoma?
On paper, yes. Toyota rates the current-generation Tacoma at up to 6,500 lbs, and even the previous generation topped out at 6,800 lbs, so the Ranger's 7,500 lbs still sits ahead. Tacoma ratings also shift with cab, drivetrain, and trim, which is why the Tacoma's towing ratings by year and trim are worth checking before you compare.
Ratings are only part of a towing decision, but 1,000 lbs is a real gap for anyone working near the limit.
FAQs
How much can a Ford Ranger tow without the tow package?
Dealer and reference sources commonly cite around 3,500 lbs, compared with 7,500 lbs with the package. Ford's top rating applies only to properly equipped trucks, so check your window sticker for the exact figure.
Can a Ford Ranger tow 5,000 pounds?
Yes. Any 2019 to 2026 Ranger with the Trailer Tow Package is rated for 7,500 lbs, and the Raptor's 5,510 lb rating also clears 5,000. Keep tongue weight in mind, since a 5,000 lb trailer puts roughly 500 to 750 lbs on the hitch.
Does a 4x4 Ranger tow more than a 4x2?
Not in recent years. Ford's tables list the same 7,500 lb maximum for 4x2 and 4x4 trucks from 2019 through 2024, with the 4x4 carrying a slightly higher gross combined weight rating.
Can a Ford Ranger tow a camper?
Many small campers fall within its range, but check the camper's loaded weight, not its dry weight. Water, propane, and gear add up fast. Then make sure the tongue weight fits within the truck's remaining payload.
What happens if you tow more than your Ranger's rating?
Ford notes that towing already puts extra stress on the engine, transmission, axle, brakes, tires, and suspension. Going past the rating adds to that strain and cuts into your braking and stability margin, which is where the real danger sits.
The Number to Check Before You Hook Up
Don't tow to the headline number. Find the lowest of your Ranger's three limits: the trailer rating, the gross combined weight rating, and what's left of your payload after passengers, gear, and tongue weight. That lowest figure is your real limit.
The door jamb label shows your payload and weight ratings, and the owner's manual or Ford's towing guide lists the trailer rating for your exact truck.
Ford also recommends servicing a truck more often when it tows regularly, so a Ranger that works weekends deserves tighter service intervals than a commuter. Every Ford Ranger towing capacity figure in this guide is a ceiling, and how you load and maintain the truck decides how close you can safely get to it.
