Toyota RAV4 Towing Capacity: Gas, Hybrid and Prime Ratings

Two Toyota RAV4s from the same year can have tow ratings that differ by more than double: 1,500 lb on one, 3,500 lb on another. Which one you have depends on the year, the powertrain and the trim.

In the US, most gas RAV4s are rated at 1,500 lb, hybrids at 1,750 lb, the RAV4 Prime at 2,500 lb, and the older Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims at 3,500 lb. The 2026 RAV4, which is hybrid only, is rated at 1,750 lb on the LE and up to 3,500 lb on other AWD trims.

These are maximum ratings for the strongest version in each group. What you can actually tow also depends on the trailer's loaded weight and whether your RAV4 has the right equipment, so confirm the rating in your owner's manual before you hitch up.

2026 Toyota RAV4 Towing Capacity

The 2026 RAV4 is a new generation, and it is sold only as a hybrid. Published ratings show the LE at 1,750 lb, with up to 3,500 lb on the other AWD trims. Toyota also improved the RAV4's towing capacity for 2026, according to The Drive.

Because the rating changes by trim, look up your exact trim before you plan a trip. Don't assume the 3,500 lb figure applies to every 2026 RAV4.

2019 to 2025 Toyota RAV4 Towing Capacity

Gas RAV4s from 2019 to 2025 in LE, XLE, XLE Premium and Limited trims are rated at 1,500 lb. The Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims are the exception. With AWD and the Tow Prep Package, they are rated at 3,500 lb.

Toyota dropped both trims from the gas lineup for the 2025 model year. That means the 2025 gas RAV4 tops out at 1,500 lb, which is lower than earlier years.

RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime Towing Capacity

The RAV4 Hybrid is rated at 1,750 lb for the 2016 to 2025 model years. The plug-in RAV4 Prime, sold from 2021 to 2025, is rated at 2,500 lb on the SE and XSE trims.

Some sources list the 2024 and 2025 Hybrid Woodland Edition at 3,500 lb with the Tow Prep Package. Toyota dealer materials and several reviews list all 2024 hybrids at 1,750 lb. If you own a Woodland Edition, confirm the rating in your owner's manual.

Older RAV4 Towing Capacity (2006 to 2018)

Fourth-generation RAV4s, from 2013 to 2018, are generally listed at 1,500 lb. From 2006 to 2012, four-cylinder RAV4s were rated at 1,500 lb, while the 3.5-liter V6 could reach 3,500 lb with the towing package.

These are older vehicles, so condition matters as much as the number. If you're buying a used RAV4 to tow with, check the brakes, cooling system and transmission first. The Toyota RAV4 reliability and ownership review covers what to look for.

What the Tow Prep Package Adds

The Tow Prep Package is what lifts the Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims to a 3,500 lb rating. It adds an upgraded radiator, a heavy-duty alternator and a transmission cooler.

The Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims also use Toyota's Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system. If you're shopping used, ask for the build sheet or confirm the package is fitted, because a RAV4 without it is limited to the lower rating.

What a RAV4 Can Realistically Tow

A 1,500 lb or 1,750 lb rating suits a small utility trailer or a motorcycle trailer, as long as you check the loaded weight. A 3,500 lb rating is where small campers and boats begin to be possible, but the loaded weight still decides.

Before you tow, check these:

  1. Loaded trailer weight. Use the weight with gear, water and fuel, not the empty weight.

  2. Payload. Tongue weight, passengers and cargo all count against your RAV4's payload. Tongue weight is commonly about 10% to 15% of the trailer's weight.

  3. Brakes. Heavier trailers need their own brakes. Check your owner's manual for the unbraked limit.

  4. Hitch and wiring. Use a hitch rated for the load, and add a brake controller if the trailer has brakes.

  5. Vehicle condition. Tires, brakes, cooling system and transmission fluid should all be in good shape.

Other compact SUVs publish their own ratings, so it's worth comparing before you buy. Rivals such as the Subaru Crosstrek are covered in Subaru Crosstrek towing capacity.

RAV4 Towing Capacity Outside the US

Ratings are stated in kilograms in most markets, and they differ from the US figures. In Australia, CarsGuide lists the 2026 RAV4 at 1,500 kg braked on AWD versions and 480 kg on 2WD hybrids. In Europe, published braked ratings for the 2026 RAV4 range from 800 to 1,650 kg, and the unbraked rating is 750 kg.

Always use the figure for your own market and version.

If You Need More Towing Capacity

If 3,500 lb is not enough, step up to a larger Toyota. The Toyota Highlander towing capacity page covers the three-row option.

For heavier loads and off-road use, see the Toyota 4Runner towing capacity page.

Final Thoughts

The RAV4's tow rating depends on the year, powertrain and trim, so the rating in your owner's manual matters more than any headline figure.

For light trailers, most RAV4s are fine. For anything near 3,500 lb, make sure your RAV4 is one of the versions rated for it.
