The entry-level Talbot Samba was designed around simplicity, low running costs and compact dimensions. Its three-door hatchback body offered a useful alternative to larger family cars, while the front-wheel-drive layout and small petrol engine kept the mechanical package straightforward. Developed from the Peugeot 104 platform, the Samba shared much of that car’s underlying engineering but received its own styling and character. The result was an economical small car aimed at drivers who valued practical everyday transport over performance or elaborate equipment.
Power comes from a 954 cc naturally aspirated four-cylinder producing 41 hp at 6,000 rpm and 48 lb·ft of torque at 2,750 rpm. A four-speed manual gearbox sends power to the front wheels, with modest output prioritising fuel efficiency over acceleration. Listed for 1983–1986, this basic version sits below the more powerful GL, Cabriolet and Rallye models in the Samba range.
