The Guarà marked a clean break from De Tomaso’s older, Ford-powered grand-tourer tradition. Developed around a lightweight composite structure, it used BMW’s M60 V8 mounted behind the cabin, giving the two-seat coupe a distinctly modern mechanical identity for the marque. Its angular bodywork also moved away from the softer shapes associated with earlier De Tomaso models, creating a machine that looked purposeful without relying on excessive ornamentation.
For 1994–1998, the Guarà Coupé produced 283 hp from its 4.0-liter V8 and sent that power through a six-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels. The combination helped it reach 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, but the car’s real significance lies in its construction and engineering direction. Double-wishbone suspension at both ends and a lightweight chassis emphasized handling rather than simply chasing straight-line speed. With production numbers remaining extremely small, the Guarà became one of De Tomaso’s most exclusive and technically distinctive road cars.
