The Guarà Spyder occupies an unusual corner of De Tomaso history because it was not simply another factory convertible. Its open body was created from the Guarà concept by Carrozzeria AutoSport, giving the compact sports car a small soft top while preserving the sharp, purposeful shape of Carlo Gaino’s design. That makes the Spyder feel more like a hand-built special than a conventional production roadster, especially given how few examples were ultimately created.
For 1994–1996, the Spyder used BMW’s M60B40 V8, a powerplant that gave this lightweight two-seater a distinctly different identity from De Tomaso’s earlier Ford-powered cars. The 4.0-liter engine produced 283 hp and drove the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. With its rear-mid-engine layout and open cockpit, the Spyder emphasized immediacy rather than luxury. Its rarity is perhaps its most compelling quality: only a handful were produced, making this obscure Guarà derivative one of the least familiar chapters in the modern history of De Tomaso.
