Audi’s V8 4.2 was the larger-engined evolution of the company’s first-generation luxury flagship, bringing considerably more muscle to an otherwise restrained executive sedan. Covering 1991–1994, its naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 produced 276 hp and 295 lb-ft, with quattro all-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions. A 155-mph top speed and 6.8-second 0–60 mph acceleration gave the sedan a distinctly stronger performance profile than the earlier 3.6-liter version.

The 4.2 also demonstrated Audi’s commitment to discreet technical sophistication rather than overt styling. Its longitudinal V8, permanent all-wheel drive, MacPherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear arrangement formed a sophisticated chassis for the period, while ventilated discs at both ends supported its higher performance. With seating for five and 21.5 cubic feet of luggage space, it remained a practical luxury sedan, combining understated design with the mechanical substance that helped establish Audi as a serious contender in the executive-car segment.
