The Ultima Sports established the British marque's approach to high performance with a simple but effective recipe: a lightweight chassis, a mid-mounted American V8 and rear-wheel drive. Its compact coupe body sits over a double-wishbone suspension system, while the five-speed manual gearbox keeps the driver closely involved in managing the engine's output. Rather than following the increasingly complex direction of mainstream supercars, the Sports focused on mechanical simplicity and an unusually strong power-to-weight ratio.
Built from 1992–2000, this version uses a naturally aspirated 5.7-litre General Motors Generation II LT1 V8 producing 355 hp and 405 lb·ft of torque. The engine's rear-mid placement and the car's listed 2,138-pound weight help deliver a claimed 3.8-second sprint to 60 mph. With a published 185 mph top speed, the original Sports offered performance that rivalled far more expensive supercars.
