1991, 1992
MSRP:$27,000 – $35,000
The Pontiac Firebird Trans Am GTA represented the more refined, performance-oriented side of Pontiac’s third-generation sports coupe range. Its low-slung profile, distinctive ground effects, and wide alloy wheels gave it a purposeful appearance, while the wraparound rear styling helped distinguish the GTA from less specialized Firebird models. Beneath its aerodynamic bodywork, the car retained the traditional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout that defined American performance coupes of the period. Its combination of distinctive styling and V8 character made it a memorable choice for drivers seeking more than an ordinary sports coupe.
For 1991–1992, the GTA was available with a 5.7-liter V8 producing 340 lb-ft of torque in its automatic configuration. A four-speed automatic transmission delivered power to the rear wheels, preserving the car’s traditional performance-oriented layout. The four-seat cabin and rear hatch added some everyday practicality to its sporting proportions. Rather than relying on modern electronic driving aids, the GTA’s appeal came from its naturally aspirated V8, rear-wheel-drive balance, and unmistakable late-third-generation Firebird character.
