The Sportage 2.0 16v Soft Top belongs to a period when compact SUVs could still look more like recreational 4x4s than polished urban crossovers. Its short two-door body and open-roof design gave the model a distinctly outdoors-oriented character, while the boxy proportions left enough room for five occupants. The naturally aspirated petrol engine kept the mechanical package relatively straightforward, making this an interesting snapshot of Kia’s early Sportage approach before the SUV market became dominated by softer, more road-focused designs.
The 2002–2003 Sportage 2.0 16v Soft Top uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 116 hp and 122 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic sends power through the four-wheel-drive system. With 0–60 mph in 14.2 seconds and a 107-mph top speed, it prioritizes traditional 4x4 usability over brisk acceleration, fitting its rugged, recreational character.
