The Sportage Wagon shows how different the compact-SUV category looked at the turn of the millennium. Its five-door body gave the original Sportage a more family-friendly character than the short soft-top, but the squared-off styling and four-wheel-drive hardware still reflected its utility-focused roots. This was not an SUV built around fashion or road manners alone; it was a relatively compact machine designed to handle everyday transport while retaining the mechanical layout and ground-going attitude of a traditional 4x4.
For 2000–2002, the Sportage Wagon uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 126 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual or four-speed automatic sends power through four-wheel drive, with 0–60 mph taking 14.2 seconds and top speed reaching 103 mph. Its modest performance is consistent with a vehicle whose priorities were practicality, traction and straightforward utility rather than speed.
