The first-generation Sportage came from a time when compact SUVs were still expected to have some genuine off-road hardware rather than simply a rugged appearance. The DOHC version paired that traditional 4x4 layout with a more capable petrol engine, while its five-door body made it considerably more practical than the shorter soft-top variants. Its boxy proportions and relatively simple mechanical layout give it a distinctly old-school character, reflecting an era when a compact SUV was still designed around utility first and lifestyle second.
For 1994–2002, the Sportage DOHC uses a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 126 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission works with four-wheel drive, while 0–60 mph takes 14.2 seconds and top speed reaches 103 mph. The combination of a longitudinal engine and 4WD gives this early Sportage the traditional mechanical character that defined its generation.
