Some small hatchbacks are built purely for city streets; the Daihatsu Sirion 1.3 Eco 4WD took a different approach by adding all-wheel drive to its compact five-door package. For 2006–2008, its naturally aspirated 1.3-liter four-cylinder delivered 86 hp and 89 lb-ft of torque, with the drivetrain sending power to all four wheels. That extra traction gave the Sirion a useful advantage on wet, slippery or uneven roads without turning it into a bulky crossover.
The compact proportions remained central to its character. At just 141.7 inches long, the Sirion was easy to place in tight urban spaces, while its five-seat cabin and flexible 7.9–22.2 cubic-foot luggage area made it more versatile than its small footprint suggested. A 103-mph top speed and 11.6-second 0–60 mph time provided adequate pace, while the 37.3-mpg combined economy figure kept its everyday credentials intact. It was an unusual combination: a city-friendly hatchback with the added confidence of AWD.
