The Sirion 1.3 is an example of how Daihatsu extracted useful performance from a compact hatchback without making it complicated. In this form, the 1.3-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder produces 90 hp at 6,000 rpm and 89 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm, giving the lightweight front-wheel-drive car enough response for both city streets and faster roads. Its five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic also let buyers choose between a more involved drive and effortless everyday motoring.
During 2008–2012, the Sirion's appeal was as much about clever packaging as its engine. The five-door body provides seating for five, while luggage capacity expands from 7.9 to 22.2 cubic feet when the rear seats are used flexibly. With a 106-mph top speed and 10.9-second 0–60 mph time, it has enough performance to avoid feeling out of its depth, yet its 40.6-mpg combined economy keeps the focus firmly on affordable daily use. It is a small hatchback designed around versatility rather than unnecessary complexity.
