The original Sirion 1.0 was a small-car answer to a practical problem: how to make a modest footprint useful without turning it into a complicated machine. Its tall five-door body and compact proportions gave it the character of a city-friendly hatchback, while the naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine kept the mechanical package deliberately simple. With just 54 BHP, it was never intended to be quick, but the light 885 kg kerb weight helped make the most of its limited output and suited the car's everyday urban role.

Produced from 1998–2001, the Sirion 1.0 also offered more flexibility than its tiny dimensions suggested. Five seats and a 235–527-litre luggage area gave the little hatchback genuine usefulness, while front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual kept the driving experience familiar and uncomplicated.
