The Sirion 1.3 Eco 4WD is an unusual take on the small hatchback: compact enough for crowded streets, yet equipped with an on-demand all-wheel-drive system that can automatically engage the rear wheels when the front tyres lose grip. In 2008–2012, that extra traction was paired with Daihatsu’s 1.3-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder, producing 90 hp and 89 lb-ft of torque. The result was not a performance car, but a small hatchback with an added layer of confidence on slippery roads.
Its practicality remained just as important as its drivetrain. The five-door cabin seats five, while the rear-seat arrangement allows luggage capacity to grow from 225 to 630 liters. A 103-mph top speed and 11.6-second 0–60 mph time give it adequate road performance, while the compact 3,605-mm body remains easy to maneuver in town. With 44.8 UK mpg combined, the Sirion manages to combine useful economy with a drivetrain rarely found in cars of this size.
