The Iso Grifo IR-9 Can-Am took the Grifo’s Italian grand-touring character and gave it an even more imposing American mechanical heart. Its long, low body concealed a Chevrolet 454 V8, turning the elegant coupe into a seriously powerful high-speed machine without abandoning Iso’s distinctive Italian design language. The combination was unusual even in its day: sophisticated European styling, a front-mid-engine layout and the unmistakable presence of a large-displacement American V8. That blend makes the Can-Am one of the most memorable and extreme versions of the Grifo story.
The 1970–1972 Grifo IR-9 Can-Am uses a naturally aspirated 7.4-liter V8 producing 395 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, while 0–60 mph takes 5.7 seconds and top speed reaches 173 mph. The front-mid-engine layout keeps the car firmly rooted in grand-touring tradition while the Chevrolet 454 supplies its exceptional straight-line performance.
