The Longchamp is an interesting detour in De Tomaso’s history: a large, understated grand tourer created for buyers who wanted Italian design without the uncompromising character of a mid-engine exotic. Tom Tjaarda shaped the body for Ghia, while the shortened Deauville platform provided the foundation for a roomy 2+2 coupe. Its long hood was dictated by the Ford V8 beneath it, giving the car a distinctly American mechanical presence beneath restrained Italian styling.
During 1980–1989, the Longchamp used a 5.8-liter Cleveland V8 producing 286 hp. The car could be ordered with either a three-speed automatic or five-speed manual, making it more adaptable to relaxed cruising than De Tomaso’s sharper sports cars. With production spread over many years but only a few hundred examples built, the Longchamp remains an unusually obscure grand tourer. Its appeal lies in that unlikely combination of understated elegance, four-seat usability and substantial V8 character.
