The 1991–1994 Alfa Romeo 33 S 16v Permanent 4 was a particularly sophisticated take on the compact 33, combining the lively 16-valve boxer engine with a permanent four-wheel-drive system. Developed as the sporting flagship of the range, it used a longitudinally mounted 1.7-liter flat-four with electronic fuel injection and a five-speed manual gearbox.

Its 132 PS output and 155 Nm of torque gave the five-door hatchback a 198 km/h top speed, while the AWD system added traction to the 33's naturally agile character.
