The 1990–1994 Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 Boxer 16v is one of the more distinctive hot-hatch offerings of its era, pairing the 33’s practical five-door body with Alfa Romeo’s characterful flat-four. Its naturally aspirated 1.7-liter boxer uses a DOHC 16-valve layout and revs to 6,500 rpm, giving this compact Alfa a distinctly sporting personality.
With front-wheel drive and a five-speed manual gearbox, the 33 1.7 Boxer 16v could reach 60 mph in about 8.1 seconds and 126 mph at the top end. More importantly, the low, compact boxer engine and lightweight 1,000-kg body gave the car a character that set it apart from more conventional front-wheel-drive hatchbacks of the period.
