The Triumph Spitfire 4 (Mk I) introduced a compact British roadster with classic sports-car proportions and an emphasis on lightweight, uncomplicated motoring. Its long bonnet, low profile and open two-seat cockpit give it a purposeful appearance, while its small footprint distinguishes it from larger contemporary sports cars. Developed around a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, it delivers its character through straightforward mechanical engineering rather than high performance. Its simple construction and traditional roadster design capture the appeal of affordable British sports cars in the early 1960s.
Produced from 1962–1964, the Spitfire 4 uses a 1.1-litre naturally aspirated inline-four gasoline engine with an OHV valvetrain and carburetor fuel delivery. It produces 63 hp at 5,750 rpm and 67 lb-ft of torque at 3,500 rpm, paired with a four-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels. Its performance includes a 0–60 mph time of 16.5 seconds and a 92 mph top speed. With seating for two and 6.7 cubic feet of luggage capacity, it maintains the practical simplicity of a traditional British roadster.
