The Porsche 356 A 1600 Convertible D offered a more practical interpretation of the open sports car, bridging the gap between the minimalist Speedster and the more comfort-oriented cabriolet. Its taller windscreen and upright convertible proportions made it better suited to touring, while the familiar rounded body retained the character of Porsche’s early designs. The Convertible D was intended for drivers who wanted open-air motoring without the Speedster’s more restrictive approach to comfort. This gave it a distinct role within the 356 family, emphasising usability alongside its sporting roots.
For 1959, the Convertible D used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre flat-four producing 59 hp and 81 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission gave the driver direct control over its modest output, while the rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout preserved the traditional 356 mechanical arrangement. Rather than chasing outright power, this version focused on an engaging, uncomplicated driving experience. Its appeal came from the combination of open-top practicality, classic proportions, and straightforward engineering.
