The Porsche 356 A 1600 Super Coupé offered a more spirited interpretation of Porsche’s compact sports-car formula. Its rounded roof, curved fenders, and carefully proportioned body gave it an unmistakable silhouette, while the Super designation identified a more powerful version of the standard 1600. Rather than relying on dramatic styling changes, this model distinguished itself through a stronger engine and a focus on lively road performance. It captured the appeal of an early Porsche: purposeful engineering wrapped in a restrained design that has aged gracefully.
For the 1956–1959 range, the coupé used a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre flat-four producing 74 hp and 86 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual gearbox sent power to the rear wheels, preserving the model’s traditional rear-engine driving layout. These mechanical details gave the Super a distinct position within the 356 A family, offering more performance than the standard 1600 while retaining the compact dimensions and everyday usability that made the original sports-car concept so appealing.
