The Porsche 356 A 1300 Super Cabriolet brought a more performance-oriented character to Porsche’s compact open-top range without changing the elegant proportions that defined the 356. Its folding roof and rounded bodywork gave it the appeal of a traditional European sports convertible, while the Super designation distinguished it from the standard 1300 Cabriolet. Rather than relying on dramatic styling or a larger engine, this version gained its identity through a more highly tuned powertrain. It represents an early Porsche approach to creating distinct driving personalities within a closely related family of cars.
For the 1956–1957 range, the Cabriolet used a naturally aspirated 1.3-litre flat-four producing 59 hp and 65 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual transmission put the driver in control, while rear-wheel drive retained the traditional mechanical layout of the 356. These specifications gave the Super a livelier character than the standard 1300 model, while its open body suited relaxed drives as well as spirited outings. Its appeal lies in the combination of compact-engine performance and classic convertible design.
